Appointment to the ICANN Board of Directors

I’m honored to share that I have been appointed to the ICANN Board of Directors, representing the Latin America & the Caribbean region.

ICANN sets the policies, rules, and global agreements for governance of critical Internet identifiers and also manages the commercial side, including domain registries and registrars. ICANN also manages the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) function which executes the technical changes decided by ICANN and the Internet community, operating as a set of core registry functions for managing the technical allocation of IP addresses, domain name root zones, and protocol parameters. 

The multistakeholder model is one of the most important (and most fragile) accomplishements in how we govern the Internet. It brings governments, the private sector, technical experts, civil society, and other stakeholders to the same table, on equal footing, to make decisions about the technologies that connect billions of people. No single corporation or government controls it. That’s by design, and it’s worth defending.

It also matters deeply that the Global South has a real voice in this process; not as an afterthought, but as a full participant shaping how the Internet works for the next generation of users. Latin America and the Caribbean are home to a huge and fast-growing share of the world’s Internet users, and our perspectives on access, affordability, language, and local infrastructure need to be reflected in decisions made at the global level.

I’m taking on this role with a clear priority: an Internet that remains open, accessible, and centered on the people who use it — not just the institutions that manage it. That means listening closely to all regions, engaging in good faith with every stakeholder group, and helping make sure the next chapter of Internet governance is built with the whole world at the table.
